Within the Thematic Digital Competence Center (TDCC) for Life Sciences and Health (LSH), a grant totaling €400,000 has been awarded to a consortium for the development and standardization of fungus-focused -omics applications.
Despite their crucial role in ecosystems, (oral) health, agriculture, and biotechnology, fungi remain under-researched. To harness their potential, the following has been proposed: a Dutch digital ecosystem that enables FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable)-compliant data, tools, training, and research collaboration.
FUNGI-NL addresses challenges such as fragmented data, a lack of FAIR analysis tools, limited digital skills, and isolated research communities. FUNGI-NL does this by establishing hubs for data, software, training, and networking. In line with Open Science principles, FUNGI-NL will empower researchers, stimulate innovation, and position the Netherlands as a leader in data-driven mycology.
This project brings together the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (KNAW), the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), Leiden University, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), and Wageningen University & Research (WUR).
