Advancing Healthy Weight and Oral Health: WP1 and WP6 Welcome Oral Hygiene Students from Inholland

As part of the MetaHealth project and within the framework of the Minor MetaHealth, WP1 and WP6 are pleased to welcome Oral Hygiene students from Inholland University of Applied Sciences. These students will conduct research on innovative approaches to promoting both oral health and overall well-being, with a focus on families with lower socioeconomic status (SES).

WP1: Community-Based Research on Healthy Weight and Oral Health

Four Oral Hygiene students have joined WP1 to engage in community-based action research. Their focus is on collaborating with healthcare, social care, and education professionals, as well as families with young children, to co-create interventions that prevent overweight and dental caries. The project aims to enhance a healthy lifestyle.

The students are working in two underserved neighborhoods of Purmerend, engaging with local families and professionals at community centers, well-baby clinics, dentists, dietitians, neighborhood playgrounds, daycare centers, and preschools. Building upon previous research conducted in Amsterdam New-West and Amsterdam North, they will first verify known barriers and facilitators for maintaining a healthy weight and oral health. Their next step involves co-creating practical tools, such as discussion cards or a game, designed to help healthcare professionals and parents communicate effective strategies that align with the daily realities of these families. The ultimate goal is to empower families to adopt healthier behaviors while enabling professionals to better support them.

WP6: Digital Tools for Oral Health Education

Simultaneously, three Oral Hygiene students have joined WP6, where they will explore how digital tools can be leveraged to improve communication and education in oral healthcare. Their research focuses on the use of media channels and digital resources to raise awareness about oral health among parents and caregivers of children under three years old. By conducting interviews with dentists, oral hygienists, and dental assistants, they aim to identify the most effective digital communication strategies for reaching low-SES families, both before and after dental visits, as well as those who do not regularly visit dental professionals.

This research within WP6 aligns with MetaHealth’s broader goal of integrating various digital health solutions to improve communication and accessibility in healthcare. The findings will contribute to recommendations for the development and optimization of digital applications that promote inclusive and effective oral health education.

Collaboration within MetaHealth

By combining the strengths of WP1 and WP6, these research projects will provide valuable insights into both community-based and digital approaches to health promotion. The integration of innovative strategies will contribute to future interventions that support families in leading healthy lifestyles.
