This paper describes the protocol for Oral Health Study of the Amsterdam Infant Microbiome Study (AIMS) cohort. The goal is to better understand how the oral microbiome develops and how it relates to oral and overall health.
What is being measured? In the Oral Health Study (OHS), a sub-study of AIMS, we assess dental health and oral hygiene in both mothers and children. We examine factors such as dental caries (tooth decay), gingival (gum) health, dental plaque, and calculus. In children, we also assess sleep-related breathing problems, oral muscle function, and taste sensitivity.
Why is this important? Collecting comprehensive oral health data helps us to interpret differences in the oral microbiome and identify factors that influence health early in life.
