RIVM National Prevention Agreement calculation shows: additional prevention measures and long-term policies needed quickly

RIVM published on the 17th of January 2024 a model calculation on the objectives of the National Prevention Agreement (NPA). Main conclusion: the impact of the NPA on alcohol prevention, obesity and smoke-free is still insufficient. This while smoking, obesity and alcohol consumption are the biggest avoidable risk factors for our health in the Netherlands, with 35,000 deaths and 9 billion healthcare expenditures annually. Only with additional measures can the targets set in 2018 be achieved. The Collaborating Health Funds (SGF) are sounding the alarm: things must improve soon, because more than half of all Dutch people have a (chronic) disease and this number is increasing. If we do not fully commit to prevention, the pressure on healthcare will not decrease and this will be very detrimental to our economy in the long run. We therefore call on the government to take substantial steps forward towards a healthy generation, together with the partners of the prevention agreement.
