Dr. Laurence Alpay is an independent Digital Health Consultant and Grant Evaluator at eHealth Dynamics Consulting, and a former Associate Professor eHealth within the Medical Technology Research Group at Inholland University of Applied Sciences (Haarlem, the Netherlands).
Her expertise lies in digital health (eHealth), persuasive technology, human–computer interaction, user-centred design, and qualitative research methods. Her work focuses on the development, evaluation, and implementation of digital health solutions that support behaviour change, self-management, and patient engagement. She is particularly interested in creating user-friendly, accessible, and personalised technologies through co-creation with patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders. In addition, her research has explored how digital technologies can facilitate interprofessional collaboration and improve healthcare delivery.
Throughout her career, Laurence has contributed to numerous national and international research projects and consortia, including in the Netherlands Vitale Delta and the Medical Delta Living Lab Geriatrics Rehabilitation @Home. Prior to joining Inholland University of Applied Sciences, she held senior research positions at TNO (Healthcare Innovation and Lifestyle Expertise Center) and Leiden University Medical Center (Department of Healthcare Informatics). Internationally, she worked as a senior researcher and postdoctoral researcher at INRIA (France) and Geneva University Hospitals (Switzerland).
Laurence is Associate Editor of the Health Informatics Journal and serves as a reviewer for leading journals in digital health and health informatics, including JMIR, Behaviour & Information Technology, and BMC Public Health. She is also an independent evaluator and expert reviewer for research and innovation funding programmes including Horizon Europe, Dutch funding schemes (Dutch Research Council/ NWO & Dutch Organisation Innovation in Health / ZonMw).
She holds a PhD in Cognitive Science and a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge-Based Systems.
Within MetaHealth, Laurence led Work Package 6 (Knowledge Utilisation and Participation) from the start of the project until January 2025. Following her early retirement from Inholland University of Applied Sciences, responsibility for the work package was transferred to Janine Sikkens. As co-supervisor of the WP6 PhD candidate Lea Hohendorf, Laurence continues to contribute to MetaHealth and remains actively involved in advancing digital health innovation through her consultancy work at eHealth Dynamics Consulting.
