FedDeepInsight – A privacy-first federated learning architecture for medical data
Medical data, hospital patient-specific data, are highly sensitive to privacy and are essential for research in the biomedical field. Although there are many new approaches to creating databases that ensure data must be FAIR and GDPR compliant, these approaches require the intervention of secured data handlers. To address this gap, this study investigates and designs a standardized Federated Learning (FL) architecture for medical data.

MetaHealth researcher Jianbo Zhang receives ERC Starters grant of approximately 1.5 million euros
Jianbo Zhang (Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam) receives the grant for the research project: A Neonatal anaerobic Gut-microbiome-on-a-Chip to decode bacterial colonization and infant gut T cell maturation (NeoGutChip). The early days of life are a critical window to develop a healthy relationship with the infant gut microbiota. Because these early residents can train our naïve immune system for later challenges such as infections and allergens.

Newsletter 5 MetaHealth
In the first half of 2025, we had another successful consortium meeting. All work packets have started, and most things go according to our planning. In the news items of this period, we proudly present information about our impact, our progress, and dissemination efforts. For instance: WP2 & WP3 had a Mini-Hackaton focused on building knowledge graphs for applications in microbiome research during the first 1000 days of life. A HvA-mathematics student wrote a very interesting article about ‘in silico modelling’ of the gut.
